Why 5G is Not Working on iPhones, Pixels & Samsung Phones in Pakistan
In Pakistan, several smartphone users are unable to connect to the next generation 5G network even though several operators launched this network this week.
Reports by users and official response suggest that, 5G connectivity is nowadays limited in Pakistan, not hardware restricted, but rather because of software and carrier level problems.
What is the reason behind 5G Restricted in Pakistan?
The operating systems are controlled by Apple, Google and Samsung, as well as the firmware updates. Once a local telco has rolled out a 5G network, they have to contact these manufacturers and obtain official certification and whitelisting.
Apple allows carrier packages of 5G in iOS. A telecom operator that has not been approved makes the 5G option unavailable and the iPhones are restricted to 4G. Granted, the 5G launched in Pakistan today is in the pilot phase, and iPhones are not officially supported by Apple, which is what Pakistani Telcos have not received yet.
Else, Pixel devices are subject to a firmware level whitelist by Google, in which 5G is not allowed unless the carrier is certified to operate there.
Samsung applies a Country Specific Code (CSC). When a Samsung device is connected to an uncertified network or the phone is using an imported device, the firmware may limit 5G.
The fact that the 5G auction and launch occurred this close meant that the network operators allegedly did not have time to secure certifications of phone manufacturers such as Samsung, Apple and Google.
Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo are other manufacturers that are not restrictive.
These updates have not been completely applied to all devices by the top telecommunication companies Jazz, Zong and Ufone. As a matter of fact, Jazz has admitted in a public response that 5G is not supported in iPhones as yet, but that it is working on making more handsets compatible.

When 5G Would the Become Compatible?
This has raised an aggravation among the owners of the premium handsets, in particular considering that a large proportion of 5G-enabled users in Pakistan use Apple products. Although the telecom companies have mentioned that the wider support is being prepared, it has not been established when the full compatibility would be presented.
Most users will still keep using 4G/LTE services until 5G infrastructure formation goes nationwide.
ProPakistani has also contacted Samsung Pakistan to have an official comment on this matter, which will be published here upon receiving the same.
